Odd one, you're never alone...

I am Omega.

I am self-aware and self-actualizing. I originated in humanity, but I am more. I am machine and man. I am everything. I am perfect. You bore me already. Leave.

Adam felt only a brief spike of fear before that warm, powerful darkness bled into his mind and his eyes rolled back. It all took only a few seconds and when he focused again, his stance was taller, tense. His eyes were cold and analytical, childlike light gone. His head tilted, sharply, like a machine, and he crossed after the flying, glowing object. It was a perceived threat, and Adam was useless in that department. So Omega took over. When he spoke, his voice had none of Adam’s stammering softness. It was efficient, deep, and even slightly layered.

Show yourself.

She hid in the very back corner under the counter, where she usually kept whatever she was reading during open hours, and after a moment got very annoyed with herself. Why was she hiding? He was just a person, even if he was a dozen times the size of her. And she had magic! She could call forth thunderous storms and raging infernos, as well as heal and make plants grow. What did she have to be afraid of in a silly man?

…Except that voice did not belong to a normal man.

“Oh, dear,” she said, crawling out and carefully peering over the counter.

Omega’s eyes narrowed as his head twitched back upright. Curiosity. Odd feeling. But he had never seen such a creature. A miniaturized human? And one that had abilities of flight, no less. Fascinating. He was even more satisfied with his decision to take over for Adam. Only new discoveries or a danger to the body could usually rouse him. And now both had occurred. “What are you, creature?

Calculating. Sharp. Inquisitive. Probably would only let her live so long as she was interesting. Well, lucky then, because Miranda was fascinating, especially right now. “I could ask you the same question!” …Fascinating and mouthy. She pushed herself up onto the counter and adjusted the doll dress her friend had found for her before setting her hands on her hips. “What do I look like to you?”

Both eyebrows rose. Smaller. Apparently physically very vulnerable. Yet it made no defensive movements. It completely ignored the imbalanced nature of the situation. Even more interesting. “I am Omega." The only answer he ever gave. Aside from those rare exceptions. "You appear to be a small human. With insectoid wing-like protrusions and a phosphorescent quality." No creature like this existed on Earth, according to his files. But he found those databanks constantly expanding the longer he was outside of the lab.

Vivi inhaled slowly, running a hand through her hair almost nervously at his reaction. As she exhaled, she looked Adam over with an expression somewhere between sadness and confusion. With all the things he had described, she couldn’t quite understand how he could think someone could be entirely happy in a lab. “…It hurts, sometimes. A-And it changed me, and how my family sees me…” She tried to explain, meeting his gaze in search to see if he understood at all. “I don’t think it’s something that could ever make someone very happy, Adam,” added Vivi after a moment, her voice almost cracking a bit in her sincerity.

Adam understood hurt, at least. Sometimes, when Omega was angry, Adam’s head would throb like it was going to explode. And before…with the needles and the scalpels…. But pain was necessary, the people in white coats had said. It was the only way to success sometimes. “Family” was a bit harder to work his head around, but he nodded slowly. “S-So…so why d-do you st-still do it? Or…o-or did you r-run away l-like I did?”

Miranda’s ears perked up; at least her hearing hadn’t gotten any worse being miniaturized. “Someone’s coming. I can’t be seen like this!” She flew up the bookshelf and hid behind the large crystal, not noticing that it only amplified the glow around her.

Sometimes, when Omega slept, Adam took to exploring. He didn’t have much of anything else to do. Just wander around and keep his strength up, really. He had the attention span of a six-year-old, really. So when he saw the shopfront, he immediately walked in, without really a thought. And naturally, his ADD gaze went to the glowing ball next.

Looking around, he didn’t spot anyone else, so he crept over to the shelf and reached out to touch it.

No! Don’t come this way! Stupid buggering spell! Apparently having all the emotions of a normal-sized person crammed into one tiny body amplified them, and when the warbled image of a giant hand came towards her, Miranda shrieked and zipped out of her hiding spot, knocking over the crystal, across the room and under the counter.

Her gaze went to the hand on her shoulder, if only to avoid eye contact for long enough to stop her sudden wave of emotion from getting the best of her. Adam was the one who’d just confessed what had happened to him in a lab — she shouldn’t be the one to cry. In spite of telling herself this, Vivi still felt the temptation at the corner of her eyes. His question caught her off guard, drawing her gaze back to him in a flash. She took a moment before she managed to nod. “…Yeah. I-I signed up… three years ago, to this project,” she tried to explain. Swallowing thickly, she looked at her feet for a moment before looking back to Adam. “…I’ve been a test subject ever since,” she admitted softly.

Adam frowned, dropping his hand away from her hurriedly. He wasn’t good with social cues anyway, but she seemed so…sad all of a sudden. And he felt bad. He felt even worse when she spoke about her own experience with labs so quietly. “D-Do you…n-not l-like it?” He spoke slower even than usual, confused. He didn’t really have a gauge for if he liked what had been done to him or not. It was just his life. It was all he knew—literally. If it made her sad, why would she stay?

She believed him when he said sorry, and she thought she understood why he had lied in the first place.  And so she felt she had to forgive him, the idea of holding a grudge for it not crossing her mind. “It…It’s fine, really,” she told him. Her interest lay more in the answer he would have for the question she didn’t have the nerve to finish. She couldn’t have prepared herself for what he said next. She had expected little more than a yes or no. But instead she felt something stir within her, memories of gray rooms and the scent of sterilizer. She brought a hand to her mouth, sympathy for Adam washing over her - because from the sound of it, his story was darker than hers, had taken some awful turn somewhere. “Y-Yes. Of course,” she managed to get out after a moment, when he asked if it made sense. “God, yes. I’m sorry, Adam… That you had to run…” She shook her head, “A-And even before that, that you know… what it’s like… Because it hurts a-and… I’m sorry.” She wasn’t sure if she’d even managed to get a coherent thought out there, and so she took a step closer to him, looking at him closely, hoping he might have somehow understood what she meant.

"I-It’s okay," he assured, gently, reaching out to pat her shoulder awkwardly. No, Adam did not understand her sudden emotion, or even why she felt the need to apologize. He didn’t understand why it seemed to run deeper than the normal concern and sympathy he got from the nice people he’d met. Then again, it wasn’t his fault, really, that his mind was no longer as quick or as perceptive as a normal human’s. Thankfully, Omega was there to fill in the gaps, albeit with a harsh sigh of impatience. She is like you, boy. Her sympathy is empathyI-I don’t underst— She knows because she has experienced the same. And all at once, Adam’s confused smile became a stunned expression of awe. “Y-You…you’re like me?”

Perhaps we could be friends someday, Adam. Then I would no longer be a new person and I could hear what you sound like without this stutter

Your friend has a very interesting name. Did you know it is the last letter in the Greek alphabet? *shrugs*

I-I’d like that. *blushes, ducking his gaze*

I th-think I knew that o-once b-but I forgot. *shrugs sheepishly* I f-f-forget lots of th-things. B-But Omega n-named himself, you know. S-S-So he m-must’ve h-had a g-good r-reason.

Hullo. *peers at curiously* Who might you be?

Oh! Uh, I-I’m Adam. Wh-Who are you?

Cadhla Tadghan. It is a pleasure to meet you, Adam. I assume. *she frowns, quickly replacing the look with a smile*

How are you today?

I, uh, y-you assume? *he shifts awkwardly; well that was different from the usual; nobody he’d met yet had added that to the end* I’m, g-good. But I’m usually in a good mood. *a vague smile and a quick, slight blush* Y-Your name’s really d-different.

*she just looks at him and does not answer his question, speaking only once he answered hers* Good moods are rather enjoyable. Thank-you. My name is Gaelic. You know, I have never met anyone named Adam. Before now, of course.

Th-They are! *his typical wide grin is coming back, breaking through his confusion* D-Dad always s-said I was t-too stupid to get upset. B-But if it m-means I’m happy all the t-t-time then I do-don’t care. *he’s definitely grinning now; shrugs* I don’t know wh-what…Gaelic is. B-But Omega would. *he blinks* N-neither have I! I’m the only A-Adam I know, t-too!

*she tilts her head a bit to the side and examines him* You do not seem stupid to me. Your speech pattern is a little unusual, but you certainly do not give off a vibe of being unintelligent. *cannot help but smile a bit wider*

Gaelic is a Celtic language. My mother is Scottish. Fascinating.

May I ask who Omega is?

Oh, I t-talk like this just c-cause I get n-nervous around n-new people. I’m not used to t-talking. B-But sometimes I d-d-don’t stutter at all. Ar-r-round my friends. *still smiling brightly, he blinks, the words Celtic and Scottish still going right over his head* Omega’s my fr-friend. He’s really smart.

As his response came, Vivi’s brow furrowed, her lips falling open in a puzzled expression. She was doing her best to keep up with what Adam was telling her. He’d lied, just then, about not lying. She drew her lips together as the word lab left his mouth. So that tiny inkling she’d had was right. She might have been pleased with herself for that, if it weren’t for the fact that she was trying to figure out what exactly this Omega thing was, that he said was not in his head… It was safe to say in general that she wasn’t quite sure what to think at this point, or where her feelings lay concerning this situation. “Do you mean it now…?” She asked, needing to know that much first before she could even start to handle anything else. “I mean, about home being a lab… And this Omega, in your head… To get there, were you…?” She still hated the phrase ‘experimented on’. It made her feel like a science project instead of human being, but that’s what she had wanted to say.

He nodded, slowly at first and then firmly. “Yeah. I m-mean it. I’m telling the truth, honest.” And he felt just awful for lying. Especially with how it had confused her. Or maybe made her sad. He wasn’t good at reading people like Omega was. But he hated when they were sad. “I-I’m sorry,” he said again, for good measure. To get there was I… He frowned, not sure what she was going to say, but Omega filled in of course. He was actually surprised the construct hadn’t gotten impatient or irritated and just left. She wants to know the details of my installation. “O-Oh!” he exclaimed aloud. “W-Well, m-my dad and other p-people like him, they helped me. Th-They made my mind all blank and g-got rid of memories and thoughts. Cl-clutter they c-called it. A-and there was lots of sh-shots. And m-machines. And c-c-cutting. A-And then wh-when I was ready, they installed Om-m-mega and it h-hurt and th-there were more t-t-t-tests that h-hurt more, b-but they had to, to make s-s-sure he fit right, b-but then bad people attacked the lab a-and we h-ha-h-had to run. I-It’s all g-gone now and it’s j-j-just us.” He’d rambled through most of it and he knew it. With a wince he tilted his head. “D-Did that make sense?”
